Strong blunderbuss or flintlock rifle of the Royal Navy:
Very strong barrel with sides then round and flared, flattened at the end, upper band going almost to the end, decorated, on each side of a net and finished by an engraved flower of lily; the thunder is punched, on the left side, of an anchor surmounted by a large crown and, on the upper side, of the letters: "A S" surmounted by a wreath; brass front sight; the end is decorated with an engraved fillet; barrel thickness at the end 5.5 mm, inner dimension 28.5 x 38.5 mm; it is signed, below: "G. GOYET"; length 80,5 cm. Engraved breech tail. Lock of the type of the end of the XVIIth, beginning of the XVIIIth, assembled with three screws, with flat body, engraved of a net, punched with the back: "A B" crowned and engraved of the marking of the port of Toulon: a sun in a circle posed on two crossed anchors, the unit surmounted by the motto, in a banner: "NEC PLURIBUS IMPAR", motto of Louis XIV (he prevails over all or above all); flat espalet dog also decorated with a fillet, the tail of the battery is engraved with a dolphin; it is signed inside: "C. Chouel". Wrought iron counterplate, cut out and engraved en suite, marked: "SERRIER" (probably the name of the maker). Iron fittings, cut out, the six rosettes of fixing of the barrel on the shaft are out of cut iron, decorated with an engraved dolphin and finished by a flower of lily, the return of the plate of layer is engraved of a dolphin holding in its mouth a cordage fixed at an anchor finished by a flower of lily Strong walnut stock in connection with the whole, slightly carved at the back of the tailstock. Wooden ramrod with iron tip (later). Total length 120 cm, weight about 6,2 kg. (Two fractures on the stock, repaired, one near the grip, the other near the middle of the lock; grooves on the butt; these problems on the stock are probably due to worm bites; the metal parts show some pitting).
Late 17th century, first third of 18th century, 1690/1724. Quite good state of conservation for this extremely rare piece.
A S, it can be the punch of control of Saint-Etienne, attributed to the years 1725/1730.
C. CHOVEL or CHOUET or CHOUVET, probably of the family of CHOUET Claude, or CHOVET forger in Saint-Etienne, about 1724/1730.
