Lord Stafford before Parliament Brown wash over black pencil lines. Monogrammed and dated lower left PD42. 8 x 13 cm Provenance: Sale of M. and Mme. and Mme Émile Vernet-Lecomte (1821-1900), cousin by marriage of Paul Delaroche, Paris, Hôtel Drouot, 27 June 1901, no. 10; Anonymous sale, Paris, Hôtel Drouot, Bologna, (Me Ader), 8 January 1943, no. 15. Lord Edward Stafford, 3rd Duke of Buckingham (1478-1521), was a courtier, military officer, and diplomat during the reigns of Henry VII and Henry VIII. After a brilliant career, he failed in 1518 to pacify Wales. In 1520, he was accused of plotting against King Henry VIII. Henry VIII himself interrogated the witnesses. Lord Stafford was then brought before a court of peers of the realm, who had him executed.
