The fortune teller predicting the future to the future Sixtus V Large rectangular miniature painted on ivory, signed lower right S. Duprat, after the painting by Schnetz presented at the Salon of 1824 and purchased by King Charles X, now kept in deposit at the Museum of Arras (inv. 7889). In its rectangular stained wood frame with gilt bronze surround. On the back a handwritten label: Purchased at the sale of the Gallery of S. A. R. Madame (the Duchess of Berry) in Rosny, Paris, February 1836. An old woman predicted to the young shepherd Montalte that he would be pope, and indeed he became pope under the name of Sixtus V. Good condition, slight wear. Restoration period. H. 14,5-W. 12 cm (to view)-Frame: H. 27,5-W. 23 cm Provenance - Collection of Marie-Caroline de Bourbons-Siciles, duchess of Berry (1798- 1870), at the castle of Rosny. - Catalogue of the sale of paintings, drawings, watercolors ... ivories, furniture and other curiosities, porcelains of Sevres, Vienna and others.... coming from the castle of Rosny whose sale will take place, under the ministry of Me Bataillard, on Monday February 22, 1836 and following days, in Paris, in the Hotel Caumartin. - Private collection. Exhibition: Salon of Douai, 1829, under the n°133: "A fortune teller predicts the future to the young shepherd Montalte, who was since the Pope Sixte-Quint", miniature according to a painting of Mr. Schnetz.
