FIRST & ONLY JEWEL OF PROOFS comprising a masthead, a title and 216 pp. printed on the front cover and dated November 6, 1878 on some labels pasted at the foot.
ATTACHED: TWO L. A. S. FROM ANATOLE FRANCE bound at the head (1 & 3 pp. in-8°, dated November 6 and 8, 1878), to his "Dear friend" [the publisher Alphonse Lemerre]. These letters explain that the author was forced to entrust the edition of his novel to Calmann Lévy, who will actually publish it the following year (1879) under the title Jocaste et le chat maigre.
