Animal-bordered shawl, Egypt, probably 7th-10th century A linen textile embroidered with polychrome wool threads and decorated with a diamond-shaped orange checkerboard pattern with small hexagonal motifs. The central field is encircled by a green geometric frieze and bordered at the two small ends by a frieze of passing animals reminiscent of elephants and fine fringes. 116 x 70 cm Stains, missing pieces, textile foxed A textile in the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto, inventory number 910.130.1, has many similarities to our piece, from the orange, green and blue colour palette to the latticework decoration in the central field and the border frieze of passing animals with the same creatures. This textile, which comes from the Walter Massey collection and is mainly made of Fayum pieces, is attributed to Egypt between the 7th and 10th centuries.
