Tiraz, Fatimid or Mamluk Egypt, 11th-13th century Linen tapestry consisting of a series of polychrome bands in predominantly yellow and red, the upper half decorated with a frieze of animal medallions, a central lion framed by two birds. 17.5 x 19 cm As is The combination of these two animal species, lion and bird, is found on an 11th-century Egyptian tiraz bearing the name of the Fatimid caliph Al-Zahir and kept in the Metropolitan Museum of New York under the number 29.136.1. Two small fragments of linen cloth, Fatimid or Mamluk Egypt, 10th-12th century. The first, embroidered with a large frieze of palmettes in reserve on a red background and geometric friezes on a yellow or green background, size of embroidery: 8.4 x 14.6 cm; size of total: 20 x 21.5 cm; the second, decorated with a wavy line framed by palmettes and two thin coloured bands, 8 x 14.5 cm.
