École ROMAINE de la fin du XVIIe siècle, atelier de Carlo MARATTA
Portrait of Sir Thomas Isham Canvas. Inscribed upper right "Sr Thomas Isham". 148.5 x 120 cm Thomas Isham II, was the son of Justinian Isham and Vere Leigh. Born on 15 March 1656 in Northamptonshire, he succeeded as Baronet of Lamport at the age of 19, on the death of his father. In October of the following year he embarked on a Grand Tour. Although it was not uncommon for young English nobility of the time to visit the continent for several months as part of their education, Sir Thomas spent two and a half years, much of it in Italy collecting art. Sir Thomas remained famous for his diary, which he wrote in Latin from 1671 to 1673 at his father's request. It consists largely of anecdotes of local events, as relayed to the boy by visitors. His diary is remarkable in that it provides a glimpse into the daily life of a teenage member of the English gentry as it unfolded on a country estate. His diary was widely available in 1875 when it was first published, but the most readily available edition is a 1971 publication of a translation by Norman Marlow with annotations by the 12th baronet, Sir Gyles Isham. Another portrait of Sir Thomas Isham painted around 1675 by Sir Peter Lely, dating from the time Thomas became a baronet, is held at Lamport Hall.
