École ITALIENNE du début du XVII e siècle Portrait of Cardinal René de Birague Canvas. 134 x 120 cm René de Birague (1506-1583), close to François I and Henri II, was adviser to the Marshal of Brissac in Piedmont, then first president of the senate of Turin and lieutenant-general in the government of Piedmont. He became a naturalized French citizen in 1565 and successively held the positions of Councillor at the Parliament of Paris, Superintendent of Finance and Keeper of the Seals. At the end of his life he returned to the orders and finally became bishop of Lodève in 1573, then cardinal in 1578.
