LOUYS (Pierre).
Aphrodite. Moeurs antiques. Paris, Société du Mercure de France, 1896. In-12, old pink morocco, triple framed with gilt fillets and mosaic listel on the covers, fleuron on the corners, spine decorated with the same decoration, gilt edges, lining and endpapers of pink moire, decorated cover preserved, half pink morocco folder with band and small covers and case (Semet & Plumelle) ORIGINAL EDITION. ONE OF 29 HEADWRITING COPIES, this one (n° 22), one of 20 on Van Gelder hollande (after nine on japon impérial). ATTACHED: A L. A. from Pierre Louÿs, neither dated ("Thursday evening") nor signed, addressed to an anonymous correspondent whom he was on first-name terms (2 pp. small in-8°). In this letter, the writer evokes a curious personal experience of temporal evaluation that he has just made during the night and that he relates to what he feels on the occasion of his work: "When I write literature, I always have the impression that I am writing it under the dictation of another me, much stronger than I am - but this feeling is difficult to prove, to make people understand.]...]" Small lateral tear at the central fold of the letter. VERY GOOD EXAMPLE IN AN OLDER TIME BINDING.
