[ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPT HOURS]. Book of hours from the middle of the 15th century (circa 1450/1460) and from the Amiens region in a small volume in-8° (122 x 175 mm), brown morocco, gilt fillets and large gilt scroll around the boards, spine with ornate nerves, gilt edges (late 17th c. binding). CHARACTERISTICS 130 vellum pages. 16 lines per page. Text in Latin (except for the calendar in French, the prayers of eight of the last ten leaves and those of the leaves inserted as replacements), in black and red ink; advertisements (from f. 26 onwards, but not on f. 77 preceding book 11). CONTENTS - ff. 1 - 12 v°: calendar of saints (in French); - ff. 13 - 17 v°: beginning of the Gospel according to St. John and continuation of the Gospels according to St. Luke, St. Matthew and St. Mark; - ff. 18: blank; - ff. 19 - 28 v°: prayers to God and the Blessed Virgin (including the Te Deum, ff. 27 - 28 v°); - ff. 28 v° - 37 v°: psalms & hymns; - ff. 38 - 42 v° : primes ; - ff. 42 v° - 45 v° : tierces ; - ff. 45 v° - 48 v° : sext ; - ff. 49 - 52 : nones ; - ff. 52 - 57 : vespers ; - ff. 57 v° - 61 v° : complines ; - ff. 61 v° - 62 v° : "Oraison a la croix" (a prayer in 42 French verses written in ink at the time or shortly afterwards); - ff. 63 - 72 v° : "Septem psalmi penitenciales" (announced by the rubric on f. 61 v°, but partially lacking); - ff. 72 v° - 77 v°: litany of the saints, "Agnus Dei", "Kyrie" & other prayers; - ff. 78 - 83 v°: other prayers; - ff. 84 - 88 v°: other prayers (to the Holy Spirit); - ff. 89 - 112 v° : other prayers; - f. 113 : "Oraison tres devoste a tous les St et Saintes de paradis" (25 lines in French, calligraphed in ink some time later); - ff. 114 v° - 120 r°: prayers to the Blessed Virgin; - f. 120 v°: "Oraison tres de vote a la grecieux Vierge marie" (5 lines in French, later); - ff. 121 - 125 v°: prayers to the Blessed Virgin (in French); - ff. 126 - 128 v°: prayers to God (in French); - ff. 129 - 130: last prayers (in Latin, on 2 ff. coming from a different manuscript) ILLUSTRATIONS Six large miniatures: - f. 19: the Annunciation (with a floral frame); - f. 78: the Blessed Virgin and St. John at the foot of the Cross (with a floral frame); - f. 84: Pentecost (with a floral frame); - f. 89: the reading of the Gospel by two monks to two nuns (with a floral frame); - f. 121: the Blessed Virgin with the Child (with a floral frame); - f. 126: Christ with the outrages raising the dead (with a floral frame). ORNAMENTATION Numerous red or blue painted and illuminated initials, of which SEVEN LARGE ACCOMPANIED WITH FLORAL HAMPES (ff. 28 v°, 38, 42 v°, 45 v°, 49, 52 & 57 v°); numerous line-ends; rubrics. ORIGIN Presence of St Frodebert on January 8 (in Troyes, but on January 2), St Satir (or Satur) on January 12 (in Achaia), St Spire on January 18, St Fourcy (or Fursy) on January 19 (in Péronne, in the diocese of Amiens, but on January 16), St Cagnes on January 21 and 28, St Ceinerance on January 23, St Valeri on January 29 (in Picardy as well?), ste Audegonde on 30 and st Oulfe (or Oulph) on 31 (in Troyes, but on .(22 FAILURE 1 f. in deficit between ff. 62 & 63. Slight traces of old wetness; pale stains on ff. 72-75, 85 & 112-113; small restorations to the foot-corner of some leaves.
