NAPLES, fonderie CHIURAZZI, vers 1900
Berenice, after the antique Bronze bust, silver eyes and lips. H: 63 cm Resting on a rectangular marble base, H. 12 cm Provenance: Former Bensimon collection Related work: Berenice, bronze, Naples, Archaeological Museum, n°inv. 5592. Related literature: Chiurazzi fonderie, ceramica, marmeria Napoli. Catalogo compilato de Salvatore Chiurazzi, Naples, 1929, model listed under no. 8, pp. 20-21. According to the Chiurazzi catalogue, the antique model of this bust found in Herculaneum on April 10, 1754 is that of Berenice, daughter of Ptolemy Philadelphus. This attribution is nevertheless discussed because this portrait does not correspond to those appearing on the coins. It would then be the goddess Artemis. The Chiurazzi Foundry offered bronze examples with different patinas and sizes. Here, particular care has been taken with the eyes and lips, which have been silvered.
