EST de la FRANCE, CHAMPAGNE, début du XVIe siècle
Saint Syre Sculpture in limestone, old traces of polychromy. Accidents, upper part of the pilgrim's drone missing. Height: 58 cm Provenance: Edmond Cormier-Thierry-Delanoue Collection Lot temporarily imported and subject to a 5.5% fee payable by the buyer in addition to the sale costs and the auction price This fine quality sculpture represents a saint who is clearly identifiable by her attributes: the hat with its wide brim showing behind her head, the rosary she holds in her left hand, the chaplain and the pilgrim's bumblebee (in her right hand). This is Saint Syre, a virgin venerated mainly in Champagne and whose place of pilgrimage is located in Rilly, near Arcis-sur-Aube (Aube). Her image can be found in many churches in the region and neighbouring areas, such as Saint-Phal, Prémierfait and Saint-Germain. The care given to the treatment of the stone surfaces and to the clothing details, the harmonious attitude created by the contrapposto pose and the slight inclination of the head, the interiorized emotion emanating from the face, all these elements place the work in the production of the Champagne school of the early 16th century.
