Wear and accidents. 76 x 102 cm The statue of Charles of Lorraine was commissioned in 1769 by the Magistrate of Brussels and the States of Brabant to the sculptor Pierre Antoine Verschaffelt who executed it in 1774-1775. Intended to commemorate the twenty-five years of the prince's regency, it was installed on the Royal Square in Brussels, with Charles of Lorraine represented as a Roman emperor. The statue was first taken down in 1793 by the French revolutionaries and then a second time, definitively, in 1794. Brother of François de Lorraine, who married Empress Maria Theresa of Austria, Chrales de Lorraine (1712-1780) was appointed Governor of the Austrian Netherlands in 1741. He was also Grand Master of the Teutonic Order. Despite his military defeats, he was very popular, which explains why this statue of his life.
