Fluent in Turkish, French and English, the artist is emblematic of the cosmopolitan Middle East of the 20th century . Fahrelnissa Zeid's work is a challenge to our current knowledge, often compartmentalized, so much so that it is part of a cultural palimpsest and a personal synthesis... The artist has never claimed to belong to any one trend, although she exhibited in the 1940s with Group D, a decisive movement in the writing of Turkish modernity, and was identified as an important member of the post-war New School of Paris. Although her art escapes classification, her biography, however, is decisive in her artistic evolution. His life, resolutely romantic, is made up of two marriages, travels (Venice, Munich, Budapest, Scotland...), depression accompanied by a suicide attempt, fortune and misfortune, social ascension and downgrading...
