Very rare and unique tapestry "Apollo and the nine Muses" from the hanging of the Story of Apollo, with the Barberini coat of arms "azure with three golden rising bees, laid 2 and 1", Barberini manufacture. Second half of the 17th century, woven between 1659 and 1663, according to the designs of Clemente Maioli. Wool and silk. Good condition, some restorations of use, especially on the left the foliage is highlighted in brown. Lined in strips. H: 4.21 m - L: 2.78 m Provenance: - Collection Barberini (inventory Carlo Barberini 1692) then Princess Barberini. - Collection Ffoulke (1889) - Private collection. This is the fifth piece of the hanging from the History of Apollo on the slopes of Parnassus surrounded by the nine Muses: Clio, Euterpe, Thalia, Melpomene, Terpsichore, Erato, Polymnia, Urania, Calliope. As indicated by Pascal-François Bertrand, it was conceived and born as a window without lateral borders. This allegory remains a veiled allusion to the figure of Pope Urban VIII, great patron and protector of the Arts. The hanging of the History of Apollo consists of five pieces delivered between 1659 and 1663 (1679 according to Harper). The different subjects are : Apollo and Daphne (1659-1660), Latona and the peasants of Lycia changed into frogs (after 1663) tapestries both kept in the Toms collection in Lausanne, Apollo and Mercury (1660-1661) kept in Rome, Apollo and Marsyas (1661-1662) at the Minneapolis Institute of Art (Minneapolis). It was commonly accepted that Giovanni Francesco Romanelli was the author of the projects at the request of Cardinal Francesco Barberini but the latter, absent from Rome, delegated this work to Clemente Maioli (sometimes spelled Maggioli) who appears in the account books as having executed them.
