Transition period chest of drawers in satin... - Lot 366 - Thierry de Maigret
Transition period chest of drawers in satin and satin veneer. The front with a central projection opens with five drawers on three rows, two of which have no crossbar. The rounded uprights are adorned with gilded bronze scrolls with motifs of posts, garlands of laurel and asparagus, extended by arched legs. The bottom drawer is decorated with a cul-de-lampe patterned with a draped vase and acanthus leaves. Grey white-veined marble top. Stamped R.V.L.C JME (Roger Vandercruse Lacroix 1728-1799). Circa 1760. H: 88 cm - W: 130 cm - D: 64 cm Private collection since the end of the 19th century. This type of chest of drawers is part of the corpus of "commodes à la grecque", commodes ordered in 1760 by Madame de Pompadour for the castle of Ménars. This model developed by J. F. Oeben, made in mahogany to "imitate the antique", and inspired by the rigour of the Greco-Roman world, was emulated by Roger Vandercruse Lacroix. Linked to J. F. Oeben by the marriage of his sister in 1749, his collaboration with the famous cabinetmaker is proved by the similarity of certain models and moreover he is mentioned as a creditor in the inventory after Oeben's death in 1763. Received master in 1755, he took over his father's workshop and worked for the merchant merchant Poirier, in particular to produce pieces of furniture with porcelain plates which the merchant had a monopoly, but he also had prestigious clients such as the Countess of Provence and the Countess of Artois. This chest of drawers is to be compared with the chest of drawers from the collection of the Princess of Faucigny Lucinge, Paris sale, 2-3 September 1952, n°206 and from the Bensimon collection, Paris sale, 19 November 1981, n°117.
