Brown tortoiseshell candy box with gold rimmed... - Lot 81 - Thierry de Maigret
Brown tortoiseshell candy box with gold rimmed second title (840 thousandths), the lid decorated with a round tortoiseshell plate painted in polychrome gouache depicting a bouquet of flowers, attributable to Jan Frans VAN DAEL (1764-1840), inlaid in a gold frame chased with scrolls on a sandblasted background, under chequered glass encircled by a royal blue enamelled net. Good condition, one flake crack. Paris, 1798-1809. Goldsmith erased. Gross weight: 104.0 g - H: 2 cm - D: 8 cm At the end of the reign of Louis XVI, the flower miniatures, mounted on boxes, were very popular, especially those of the brothers Corneille and Gérard Van Spaendonck (1746-1822) and their competitor Jean-François Van Daël, who specialized in gouache paintings of flowers. 19th century collectors such as Baron Léopold Double were keen to own some of these candy boxes, of which the Louvre preserves a few examples (inv. OA 7968 and OA 6844).
