Trapezoid-shaped flat case in ivory mounted in 750-thousandths gold, gold interior with compartments for a notebook of two ivory writing tablets joined by a gold rivet and for a pencil (missing). The pencil inscribed tablets are dated 1806 and 1897. The hinged lid, which opens with a push-piece, is inscribed in gold Souvenir / Friendship on each side. Each side is adorned with a painted oval miniature with a country scene edged with gold foliage, which is fixed under glass. Small cracks in ivory. Paris, 1778-1779. Goldsmith: probably François Durand (received in 1762) or François Delanoy (received in 1768). Preserved in its original cardboard case in green shagreen, inside in beige silk velvet, opening with a hinge (the push button is missing). Gross weight: 60.8 g H: 8.7 cm - L: 5.2 cm Diderot mentions these precious cases in the Encyclopedia under the name of "tablets": "the tablets we use for writing are a kind of small book that has a few sheets of ivory, paper or prepared parchment, on which we write with a key or a pencil the things we want to remember".
