Guy de Maupassant (1850-1893).
Autograph poem. Ballad. Légende de la chambre des demoiselles à Étretat, 8 pages in-8° with the number L M crowned. (Paper a little crumpled, marks of folds, edges a little crumpled, small slits, the 4th page lightly rubbed.) Youth poem on the legend of a cave in the cliffs of Étretat. Long piece of 14 sizains, plus a "S uite" of 13 sizains, in a different primitive version of the published text, the penultimate stanza having been added, with a first version corrected and crossed out. "Slowly the stream comes // On the shore // May it always rock and flatter // It's a sad song of autumn // Monotonous // That cries after the good days. // I hear a voice higher // On the shore // Dominating the sound of the stream // What is this touching voice // That enchants me // Like a sad, sweet sob // Isn't it my poor muse // Who's having fun // Singing to forget me // Come back sadly abandoned // My thought // At your yoke will bend"... - We enclose a copy of the final version in another hand with a few corrections.
