She applauds her courage: "Adding for you to paraphrase a beautiful page in the history of Philosophy [...], I'd like to celebrate with the most fervent of people your noble independence of spirit and this masterful eloquence whose rise will never be stopped by any cabal"... - May 27th. She is delighted to receive a dispatch: "All misery is nothing compared to this horror of absence and uncertainty"... - July-October 1888, amorous outpourings: "I'm not reasonable, you know that, and I love you too much." - (Wednesday evening)... "I'm happy, how can I not be, since you love me, and for me you reserve all the joy, all the beauty and all the happiness in the world." - (Thursday morning)... "Remember, intimacy is sweet with me, our happiness was intoxicating." - Friday morning... "My darling, you've taken away everything that was the price of life for me, you've discoloured everything that isn't you, you're my joy and my torture, I love you with all the weakness you put in me, but my love is full of revolt and mistrust." - On Monday... She complains of their separation, accuses her lover of making her suffer "abominably." - Thursday night... Thursday [Stuttgart 19 September 1889]. "See if I am mad, my beloved... I would love to feel my flesh bitten by a cilice that I would wear for love of you.
