The French 18th century is a period of exceptional creation in the European decorative arts. Towards the middle of the century, the economic context of France was particularly flourishing and we witness the enrichment of new classes of society, mainly from aristocratic and financial circles, anxious to live in a certain comfort by furnishing their residences with pieces of woodwork and joinery and more or less luxurious objets d'art. In the specific field of joinery, consoles, known at the time as "table legs", whose main role was to support more or less rare marble tops, were regularly mentioned in old documents, particularly in inventories after death, in which these pieces were, more often than not, not prized because they were supposed to be an integral part of real estate. Made in this context, the console that we present is characteristic of Parisian creations of the mid-eighteenth century; its original composition, tending towards a symmetrical rocaille, can be compared to preparatory drawings by some of the great ornamentalists or architects of the time, particularly those of Pierre Contant d'Ivry (1698-1777).
