Blondel Merry-Joseph (1781/1853), portrait of a battalion commander of the National Guard on horseback, in blue dress with red piping, silver buttons decorated with a large fleur-de-lis, silver aiguillettes, epaulette and counterepaulette; he is decorated with the cross of a knight of the Order of St. Louis and that of a knight of the Order of the Legion of Honour; oil on canvas, signed and dated on the right side: "Blondel. 1817"; 65.5 x 56 cm. Restoration period. Very good condition. Merry-Joseph BLONDEL, born in Paris on July 25, 1781 † in Paris on June 12, 1853, history and portrait painter, French school. He was a pupil of Baron REGNAULT. At a very young age, he gave great hopes and, at 18, in 1803, he won the 1st Grand Prix of Rome, but he did not leave for Italy until 1809 and returned in 1812. From then on, he exhibited regularly at the Salons until 1847. He was awarded a gold medal in 1817. Knight of the Legion of Honour, he had a professorship at the School of Fine Arts and an armchair at the Institute.
