Double porcelain saleron, with later gilded metal mounts forming an inkwell, with polychrome and gold decoration of a semi of barbels between two rows of pink pearls, wolf's teeth and gold netting on the edges, the mounts forming a four-legged base with seeds, two interiors with trimmings and two lids, the porcelain with a small sheen at the base, with chips and small wears. Markings in blue with two interlaced L's, letter probably dated ll for 1788, painter's mark for Mrs. Descoins. L. of the porcelain: 13 cm 18th century. Provenance: Probably from the "pearls and barbels" service delivered on April 26, 1788 to Madame la Comtesse d'Artois. The first service of this type of decoration, "perles et barbeaux" (with pink pearls), seems to be the one delivered to the Countess of Provence at the end of 1781. This service was a dessert service and did not include salt shakers. Another in the same spirit was delivered in April 1788 to the Countess of Artois, her sister. According to David Peters (cf. Sèvres plates and services of the 18th century, Little Bekhamsted, 2005, Vol.IV p.852), the latter could have been the complement of the first service bought by the Countess d'Artois from her sister and possibly for the Château de Saint-Cloud. In any case, this second delivery included 12 double salt shakers at the price of 18 pounds each. A plate of this model is kept at the Louvre museum (Inv. TH 1163), a tea box at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, and two plates at the Petit Trianon in Versailles.
