ALLEMAGNE (Creussen)
Dated and armoured stoneware mug in cylindrical form, with a handle, decorated in relief with a frieze of saints named on a mound with sprigs of lily of the valley, distributed around a large coat of arms, between two friezes of acanthus leaves and above a long inscription CVRFVRST: DVRCHL (TOP): IN BAYRN; MAVTTNERN ZU INGELSTATT. HERRN IOHANN SCHALCKHEN- 1649 - , decorated with polychrome and gold enamel, small chips at the base, some wear. Mounts with a turned grip and a handle surmounted by a shell. XVIIth century, with a later pewter frame. L: 21.5 cm The exact translation of this inscription remains unclear to this day. If translated word for word it reads: Electoral Prince/Serene Highness/Serene Highness/Bavaria/Mauttnern (surname)/of Ingoldstat/Mister/Johann Chalckhen/1649. One could put forward the theory that Mr. Johann Chalckhen received this mug as a gift from the Mauttnern family (or a member of it), originally from Bavaria where the Electoral Prince and Serene Highness (Ferdinand of Bavaria, born von Bayern) reigned. The crown above the coat of arms was used for persons who were knighted but not titled.
