MAÎTRE des ANCIENS PAYS-BAS Actif en France vers 1500
The Rite of Clodomir, King of the Franks, and the miracle of the holy bulb Saint Michael the Archangel and Saint Remi Bishop holding the holy bulb deposited by the dove, surround, against a backdrop of landscape, King Clodomir kneeling before the baptismal font near his crown of fleurs-de-lis. On the right in a figurative representation, probably his mother Clothilde and his wife Gondioque. Annotated in Gothic letters in the halos S. Michael and S. Reminius; and: Clodomir. Ro (...) Frances. Temperament and oil on panel. Parquetry (missing lower left; some restorations) H: 103 cm - L: 55,5 cm The composition represents the coronation of Clovis' second son (c. 466 - 511) Clodomir (c. 495 - 526), king of the Franks of the Kingdom of Orleans (511 - 524), taking as a model the coronation of his father by Bishop Remi in Rheims. The coronation of Louis XII is painted in 1501, parallel to that of King David, in two Amiens sections attributed to the Master Antoine Clabault (Paris, Musée de Cluny); the coronation of Clovis around 1500, by the Master of Saint Gilles (Washington; National Gallery of Art) (Cf. Catalogue of the exhibition France 1500). Between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. N° 175 & n° 178, p.348 - Paris Grand - Palais - RMN 2010). It is thus
