In the 1600s Abraham Bloemaert dealt with the theme of the Vanities, which at the time was rather reserved for Leiden painters. Our painting is the only one preserved; two have disappeared, one cited in 1604 by Van Mander, the other also disappeared, in which Vanity was associated with a female figure. These two lost paintings are known from engravings (see M. Roethlisberger, opus cited above, nos. 55 and 56).
