École FRANÇAISE vers 1800, dans le goût de Hyacinthe RIGAUD
Portrait of Jacques de Chastenet de Puysségur Toile. H: 93 - W: 75 cm A reprise of the portrait of Jacques François de Chastenet, Marquis de Puysségur, kept at the Musée de l'Armée, Paris, of which there are several versions. The model in our painting had a career in the King's regiment throughout his life, from the age of 17, before becoming a lieutenant-colonel. A logistical connoisseur, regularly consulted by Louis XIV for future campaigns, he was associated with the councils of war. Louis XIV even decided to appoint him for life as Marshal General of the King's camp lodgings and armies. He served in the army of Flanders and in Spain, where he was sent in 1704 to reorganise the army and took part in the siege of Barcelona. Appointed lieutenant-general in 1706, he succeeded in conquering the strongholds of the Netherlands in one night. Under the Regency, he was a member of the War Council, then was raised to the dignity of Marshal of France by Louis XV in 1734. In 1739, Louis XV made him a knight of the King's orders (orders of St. Michael and the Holy Spirit). Governor of Condé and Bergues, appointed Commander-in-Chief of the Armies of the North, he died in Paris in August 1743.
