Denis Auguste AFFRE (1793-1848) archevêque de Paris, tué sur les barricades le 25 juin 1848
2 L.A.S., Paris 1846- 1847, to Amédée Girod de l'Ain; 3 pages in-8, heading Archbishopric of Paris. Approach the Chairman of the Litigation Committee of the Council of State in favour of the Benedictines of the Temple, the former place of detention of Louis XVI and his family. March 1, 1846. "You will be called upon to judge between the Domain and the nuns of the Temple a rather important question of ownership"... He points out that three years ago, the Minister of Finance told him that "if the Temple were abandoned at the Estate we could not destroy a monument dedicated to so many respectable memories. We would only benefit from the costs of care and maintenance".... He also argues that the change of destination of the Temple house if the nuns are expelled will cause "all pious people to suffer. What could be more legitimate than to leave a religious institution that is a permanent atonement in such a natural place"... January 5, 1847. He reiterated his observation of the "great inconvenience of destroying such an important monument and that great misfortunes have in some way consecrated it. If the monument is preserved, these nuns seem to me and will undoubtedly seem to you to be the most economical and yet most suitable guardians"....
