L.A.S., Rome, May 8, 1829, to his daughter Camille, Mrs. Hippolyte Lecomte; 3 pages in-4. Description of a celebration given in Rome by Chateaubriand in honour of the Grand Duchess Helena, sister-in-law of the Emperor of Russia. The ambassador asked Horace to lend him the Medici Palace and its outbuildings, and commissioned a Roman architect to carry out the execution: "The terrace of the small wood was chosen for the place of the meal. A huge frame was built in three days. Twenty-two columns were planted to support the huge awning that was to cover this dining room. [...]. The festaroles, i. e. the upholsterers, have placed orange curtains with great taste and raised by garlands of flowers. The columns were also decorated with garlands, the cy ones with laurels. The princess' table should be for fifty people. She must do the honors. Only one man has been admitted, the Prince of Wurtenberg, his father"... Each table, sumptuously set up, must have had its president: Mrs de Chateaubriand, Mrs Horace, etc., but that very morning, even as the inhabitants of the Academy were admiring the preparations, a wind blew everything away, the architect lost his mind and the Chateaubriand "alloient everything to give up: when he came up with the idea to Horace to ask the young boarders of the academy to try to take advantage of what had not been too damaged. In two hours the entire interior of the palace was beautifully decorated... The steward, the officer and the cook of Mr. de Chateaubriand worked wonders, the Grand Duchess seemed amazed. Despite the tables set up, in the gallery of ancient statues many guests remained standing, the plate in hand: "The pedestals of the Apollo, Laocon, Gladiator, Venus &c &c &c &c served as a table"...
