[Alfred de MUSSET]. Charles SAINTE-BEUVE
Autograph manuscript, Vers d'Alfred de Musset; 1 page in-8 laminated on cardboard (traces of glue on the back). Copy by Sainte-Beuve of this amusing poem by Musset, which he signs "Vidocq". The poem is known as À une muse ou Une valseuse dans le cenacle romantique, and dates from 1834. Musset's autograph had six verses (the 4th is missing here) and was offered to the actor Regnier. Maurice Clouard (Unpublished documents on Alfred de Musset, A. Rouquette, 1900, p. 176) points out that this poem was partially published in Le Figaro on 4 November 1855, and was collected in Volume I of La Curiosité littéraire (1880). Sainte-Beuve has put in clear, here, by underlining them, the names of the people targeted by the poet: "When Madame Waldor to Paul Foucher clings Showing the tartar of her teeth, And in the waltz on fire, like the oyster to the rock, Embeds itself to her burning muscles"...
