Guy de MAUPASSANT
L.A.S., 10, rue de Montchanin[Paris] 8 December 1889,[to Ernest Reyer]; 4 pages in-8 to its number (mourning, small gap at an angle without touching the text, small piece of gummed paper stuck). Begs for a box at the premiere of SALAMMMBÔ, a 5 act opera by Camille du Locle based on Flaubert's novel, music by Ernest Reyer, premiered at the Monnaie de Bruxelles on February 10, 1890. Perhaps he is asking for the impossible: a good lodge for the first performance of Salammbô. "I have only one title, but it is worth many others, it is to have certainly been the man Flaubert loved best in the last years of his life, and to whom he had given the best part of his heart and confidence as an artist"... His "somewhat tense relations with his family" prevent him from addressing her, but he promised "some people, fervent friends of his memory like me, that we would go together to see and listen to this dream come true": "no one has a moral right and a duty - because he always called me his disciple - to attend the rebirth of the work in which the master musician you are has brought a new life"...
