[Victor HUGO]. Juliette DROUET (1806-1883)
P.A., 30 November 1839; 2 pages in-8. Copy of two versions of a letter from Victor Hugo to Balzac, to inform him of his third candidacy for the Académie française[on December 2, 1839, Balzac formally withdrew his own candidacy for Michaud's chair, so as not to run against Hugo]. The second is marked "confidential"[Hugo's letter is in the Lovenjoul collection]: "Since you wish to learn it from me, I hasten to let you know that since the other night things have turned out in the most honourable way and that my application results from it quite naturally. So I am running, but, by grace, believe me, do not withdraw..."...
