VICTOR HUGO
Partially autographed manuscript[for Histoire d'un crime, 1877 or shortly thereafter]; 1 page and a half in-fol. Fragment of a manuscript intended for HISTORY OF A CRIME, I, 13, "Louis Bonaparte de Profil". The chapter was a late addition to this December Two relationship; in the autograph manuscript, it is dated August 20, 1877. The right half of the sheet, paginated "8", is occupied by the copy, by Juliette Drouet, of a text concerning the acceptance of the coup d'état by the légitimists (Thomine-Desmazures, Falloux, Lefebvre de Vatimesnil). Hugo retouched the copy, correcting several lessons and adding a resigned reply from an anonymous politician, before crossing out a digressive passage illustrating Louis Bonaparte's political inconstancy, then the whole page, which he replaced with this development criticizing Napoleon III: "Louis Bonaparte has no passion. In him the Dutch calm the Corsican, if there is Corsican. In addition, he read the Prince's book in his Ham prison. Louis Bonaparte is one of those men who suffered the deep cooling of Machiavelli. He has the pallor of a cheating player. He's an indifferent[...]. He has no homeland or family. This Napoleon took St . Helena in large part. Grudges, what's the point? There are only interests on earth. Louis Bonaparte forgives, because he exploits. He forgets everything to better calculate everything. What does his uncle care about? He uses it, but does not use it. Louis Bonaparte only has the amount of useful memory. Hudson Lowe did not prevent him from smiling at the English; the Marquis de Montchenu did not prevent him from smiling at the Royalists"... On the back is another draft corrected for the same chapter: "He was a serious politician, doing nothing beyond what is indicated, not taken away, of rather good company, without abruptness, without swearing, causing with gentleness a necessary carnage, massacring because it is necessary"...
