VICTOR HUGO
L.A.S. "Victor H.", of the Assembly 27 January[1849], to his uncle, General Louis Hugo, in Tulle; 2.5 pages in-8, address (small tear by broken seal). Nice letter on the political situation. "My good uncle, it takes all our storms for me to write to you so late. We don't breathe here, we don't live, we're in the whirlwind. Everything will be fine, if we can save the country. In the meantime we are thinking of you, you presided, although absent, at this family meal where we all drank your health, the turkey with truffles was admirable and was as cheerfully eaten as in times of calm and peace. We have fulfilled all your intentions, with the only regret, but very keen, not to have you among us. The political sky has become quite dark again in recent days. This was to be expected. Things don't get better in an instant. We must allow time for recovery, but I look forward to our poor country being healed and standing up. As for me, I am dedicated to it"....
