VICTOR HUGO
L.A.S., 5 June[1841], at Narcisse-Achille de Salvandy, "of the Académie française, député"; 1 page in-8, address. About his reception speech at the Academy, where he had described Louis-Philippe as Dumouriez's aide de camp (session of June 3, 1841; Salvandy had given the reply speech to the recipient). "What the king desires will be done, my dear colleague. The biographies are formal, but I'd rather believe the king than his biographies. So I'll put Kellermann's lieutenant, and I won't say Dumouriez's name again. I'll immediately send the speech to Didot's house. I have just reread yours in the Debates, and I am happy to tell you that if, as a man, in what is probably my illusions, it perhaps offends me a little, as a writing, it charms me"...
