Joseph-Léopold-Sigisbert HUGO (1773-1828) général, père de Victor Hugo
L.A.S., Blois 24 November 1823, to his son Victor Hugo; 3 pages in-8, address (small gaps due to broken seals, without affecting the text). He speaks with praise of the "charming portrait of the friend of your heart", executed by Adèle herself, which strikes by its resemblance "with the beautiful love we have lost: it had become pretty like her". Then he gives news of Eugene, whom his former quartermaster went to see in Charenton: "Unfortunately[...] he is still physically the same, his head falling on his chest and speaking only by monosyllables: I urge you all to write to him in a regulated way, Abel the 1st, you the 10th, Adolphe the 20th"... He announced his actions in favour of Eugene, and also in favour of the French Muse, and then asked him to ask him "if we will soon have something of our Spanish properties"; his letter to the Duke of Bellune was sent to Mr. de Chateaubriand.... "I received a letter from Mr. Rabbe in which he talks to me enthusiastically about you, it seems that he recently had the opportunity to defend you and that he did so in the southern heat"...
