Ida FERRIER (1811-1859) comédienne, elle épousa Dumas père
13 L.A.S. "I. Dumas", Naples, Florence and Rome 1847-1852, to M. Lacan, lawyer in Paris; 56 pages in-8, most with envelope or address. Correspondence relating to the separation of the property of the Dumas spouses. Ida complains about the conduct and attitude of her husband, who claims "that the scandal of her life doubles the value of her books"; she would like him to distribute 18,000 francs over his wife, mother-in-law and daughter (1 August 1847)... She highlights her daughter-in-law Mary's desire to return to her side, fears a trial, and talks about the value of Monte Cristo Castle. "I did not come to Italy by choice: I obeyed the will of Mr Dumas, who only agreed to pay me a pension, on the express condition that I would move away and leave him in Paris, alone and free" (December 2)... She approved her lawyer's plan, urged him to press for the separation of property and was alarmed that Marie could not leave Paris without her father's permission... "Mr. Dumas seems to fear extremely the unfortunate consequences of a trial in the middle of the disorder of his affairs, which would thus be too enlightened" (February 1[1848])... She talks about her debts, and her fears after the days of February: "There are no words to express the anguish in which I live here" (April 7).... It is said that Monte Cristo is put up for sale "to be bought back by Mr Dumas for a small part of its value. This sale, made under such disastrous circumstances, would accomplish my ruin, that of my mother, and later that of Mary" (May 29).... Dumas' position renders court judgments unenforceable.... She hopes for something from the kindness of Prince Napoleon and King Jerome her father, etc. We attach an L.A.S. to Anténor Joly. Plus a manuscript (by Paul Lacroix, the Bibliophile Jacob?), telling the story of Dumas' marriage.
