Alexandre DUMAS fils (1824-1895)
L.A.S., October 18[1844], to Joseph Méry, librarian in Marseille; 6 pages in-8, address (small tear by broken seal). A LONG LETTER RECOUNTING HER LOVE AFFAIR WITH AN ACTRESS SHE MET IN MARSEILLES, BEFORE GETTING INVOLVED WITH MARIE DUPLESSIS. He recalls his past confidences in Méry: "You tell me when I told you about my adventures that I had acted wisely and that I had been stronger than you had been yourself. Well, my dear, what I just did is driving all this down."... His father recently advised him to "leave the people I had come to join in Paris", but found no pretext. "Finally, the young and interesting friend who was so hospitable to me in your good city once told me these memorable words: - I fear that my relationship with you will confuse you with your father. In the theatre I have more money to spend than you can give me even if it bothers you. Let's stay where we are and I swear to you, you have nothing to blame me for. I took it literally and for two weeks I haven't set foot in it again. The next day she ran after me all day long going to my friends' house, sending them to me, making all the concessions imaginable - I didn't answer it and when I was alone crying hot tears. Finally our mutual despair has subsided. Last Sunday she came to see me and found me - she let me understand that even though she was with another man she considered a husband serving her only for money she would be delighted to continue sleeping with Marseille's friends. So I took her hands and respectfully kissed her - advising her not to come to see me often because it would compromise her for nothing. I fraternally brought her back to my door despite some tears running through those big blue eyes that starred the Gymnasium and never brother and sister have been so chaste as the two of us"... Then he gives a great news: "The debacle is in the Dumas house - the husband and wife[Ida Ferrier] are about to separate like Abraham and Agar for something other than sterility -
