Alexandre DUMAS père. (1802-1870)
2 autograph manuscripts, the first one signed; 1 page in-8 and 2 pages in-fol. De profundis clamavi ad te, dated "31 Xbre 10 heures du soir". This poem of four quatrains was inserted in Urbain Grandier, a drama in 5 acts by Dumas and Maquet[Théâtre-Historique, 30 March 1850] in the 3rd painting, scene 1, where the priest watches over Ursula's body: "I have from the deepest part of the abyssue The arms twisted by pain Crié vers mon maître sublime Pitié pour nous pitié Seigneur"... Fragment of dialogue, 57 verses, between Medora and Conrad, the lovers of Byron's privateer, probably for a dramatic adaptation of the poem[Verdi's opera dates from 1848, the ballet-pantomime of Saint-Georges and Mazillier, music by Adolphe Adam, from 1856]. Here, Medora lets herself go to sleep in Conrad's arms: "Conrad with despair Sleep... is death!... Medora No, the death has not so softly affected My troubled mind... under new shades Each object vaguely comes to offer itself in turn I have sweet memories of happiness and love"...
