Honoré de balzac (1799-1850)
L.A.S. "de B-c", 28 February[1832, at the Marquise de Castries]; 2 pages in-8 (repairs with tape on one edge). Second letter from Balzac to the Marquise de Castries, who has just renounced anonymity and invited Balzac to visit him. "Mrs. Daignez accept my affectionate thanks and expression of my deep gratitude for the mark of trust you have pleased to give me. It is so rare to meet noble hearts and true friendships; I, above all, am so devoid of sincere support on which I can rely that I accept, at the risk of losing much to being known personally, your generous offer. If I had not embarked on a hasty job, I would have been able to pay you my respects with this frankness of heart that is so dear to you; but, after many struggles and honourable misfortunes, the misfortunes of which we are proud, I still have a few more steps to take to conquer a few good hours where, I am no longer a writer, nor an artist, where I can be myself, and it is from these hours that I would like to devote to you if you allow me. You are happy, Madam, to be able to embellish your solitude with poetry without work, I fill it with work without poetry; I hope to become better for you and I am convinced that I can only gain in the trade of a soul as noble and as sweet as yours"... Correspondence (Pléiade), t. I, n° 32-45.
