Pierre BONNARD (1867-1947)
Rue à Paris, circa 1895 Oil on cardboard laminated on parquet panel, signed top left 49.5 x 35 cm (the cardboard) 50.5 x 36 cm (the panel) Origin: - Maurice Renou, Paris, until 1974 - 1974, by succession to his nephews, Mr. and Mrs. M. - 11 December 2019, sale as part of the succession of Mrs. M. Bibliography: - Bonnard Catalogue Raisonné de l'oeuvre peint, Tome I, works from 1888 to 1905, by Jean and Henry Dauberville, Éditions Bernheim-Jeune, Paris 1965, described and reproduced under No. 99 (with dimensions of 50 x 37 cm) The very particular framing of this painting and many other works from this period makes us think of instant shots. In the years 1890/1891 Bonnard tried his hand at photography and, as his nephew Antoine Terrasse recounted: Through photography, he sought to capture life itself and to confront this technique with that of painting. In this Street in Paris, that's exactly what we have; life is captured, it's a still image through the lens of the painter-new photographer. It is interesting to see in this Street in Paris the result of a research begun in 1894 with La passerante (Catalogue Raisonné Dauberville N°55) where we find this face plunging into the enigmatic gaze. In a Street in Paris, Bonnard has taken the details much further, the quality of the complexion, the look imbued with both questioning and shyness and this sketched smile give an extraordinary presence to this woman with the sleeve. This work is accompanied by its export certificate for cultural property and a certificate from the Art Loss Register.
