Rare tapestry "Venus entrusts Mercury with the education of Love", the hanging of the Love of the Gods, Parisian workshops in the suburb of St Marcel, AC monogram in the border for Alexandre de Comans, active from 1635 to 1650, 1st half of the 17th century, according to the followers of Simon Vouet or Simon Vouet himself (1590-1649). Condition: wool and silk, some snags and weaknesses especially on the left before the border, oxidation, doubled. H: 3.42 - L: 3.05 m This scene is surrounded by a rich border decorated with allegories at the corners in the taste of Jean Cotelle. A tapestry from the Charles F. Slotter collection with an identical border was sold at Christie's New York on May 19, 1988 lot 245, then on June 21, 2012 lot 1020. Several draperies of the Love of the Gods are given to Simon Vouet, each with variations, especially in the subjects. Alexandre de Comans was the son of Marc de Comans, a Flemish weaver who, with François de La Planche at the request of Henri IV, created the Parisians workshops, i. e. the workshops before those of the Goblins in 1662. At his death his brother Hippolyte succeeded him. In the first half of the 17th century, these workshops were in full expansion and these subjects were very popular. Smooth and Delicious. Masterpieces of the Tapestry from Henri IV to Louis XIV. Exposure Château de Chambord. NMR. 1996. Mr. Fenaille. General condition of the tapestries of the Gobelins manufactory from its origin to the present day, 1600-1900. Volume I. 1601-1662. p. 335.
