The fall of Icarus The fall of Phaeton Two brass forming a pendant, doubled by a parquet floor. 39 x 51 cm and 39 x 51,5 cm See the reproductions These two interesting panels deal with a subtle and fine writing of two stories close to mythology. The character of Icarus, like that of Phaeton, embodies the reckless impulses of a somewhat arrogant youth in the face of danger. In the version told by Virgil, Icarus felt invincible when escaping the labyrinth thanks to his feather wings bound with wax, disobeyed his father Daedalus and approached, despite his recommendations, too close to the sun. He then melted the wax from his wings to fall and drown in the sea. Likewise, Phaeton, feeling able to drive the powerful dawn chariot belonging to his father Phebus, was punished by Zeus with a fatal lightning strike for endangering the earth and burning everything in its path, unable to control the too powerful quadriga. Our two brass instruments present these mythological stories by including them in broad perspectives opening onto imaginary landscapes. The light and generous vegetation remind us of the work of Paul Bril to whom we attribute the painting.
