Auguste CHAMBRY, captain at the 2nd spahis. "He had fortune and was not short of spirit", according to Du BARAIL: My Memories, Volume 1, page 223. He is represented as Field Marshal on the watercolour of the Prince of Joinville: "Funeral of the Chief General Count of DANRÉMONT on 18.10.1837" (Army Museum). Joseph VANTINI, known as "YUSUPH" or "YOUSSOUF", born on the island of Elba around 1809 or 1810, where he met the Emperor, his parents working for him, † on 16 March 1866, camp marshal, division general, he was bey de Constantine, grand officer of the Legion of Honour, 25 citations. He distinguished himself during the conquest of Algeria, including the capture of the ABD-EL-KADER smala, the Battle of the Isly. He was responsible for the creation of the first three spahis regiments, with the rank of Colonel General of the African Spahis. His life is a real novel, he will finish his extraordinary military career, in 1866, as general commanding the Montpellier division.
