Remembrance of Marshal Bugeaud: Beautiful... - Lot 22 - Thierry de Maigret
Remembrance of Marshal Bugeaud: Beautiful North African bag called "dejbidah" type "sabretache" in red soft leather, the large outer flap fully embroidered with flowers and arabesques of golden silver threads, twists and sequins; the inside is lined with gold-colored damask fabric and decorated with a red leather motif embroidered with golden silver threads afterwards; bag with four compartments on the front, flaps and compartments in red leather also heavily embroidered with gilded silver threads decorated with foliage, arabesques and flowers, equipped at the back with a fifth compartment without embroidery and at the bottom with trimmings with two tassels; the whole is held by two rings and equipped with a red cloth fastening strap embroidered on the front with gilded silver threads; height 36 cm, width 30.5 cm. (Some wear and oxidation of the gilding of the embroideries). Period, Algeria, circa 1840. Good condition PROVENANCE: - Thomas-Robert BUGEAUD, Marshal of France, Marquis de la Piconnerie and Duke of Isly. - Sale, Hôtel Drouot, December 4, 1951. - Sale, Hôtel Drouot, 28 and 29 October 1957, No. 378. - René JOHNSON. - Private collection since February 1959. - PIASA Sale, Hôtel Drouot, May 30, 2008, No. 195 (The sale slip and some documents attesting to the origin will be given to the buyer). BUGEAUD's conservatism would suggest that this dejbidah would be more of a gift than a personal order. The most likely circumstance, during BUGEAUD's career in Algeria, to receive such a gift would be the signing of the Treaty of Tafna on 30 May 1837 with ABD EL KADER.
